Seahawk Men's Basketball Notches 18-Point Win over Greensboro

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. – Sophomore forward Isaiah Martin (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park) dropped a career-best 25 points in helping the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team snap their two-game skid Saturday evening. The Seahawks posted a convincing 81-63 victory over Greensboro College on the final day of the Guilford College Classic.

Martin was unstoppable as he went 10-of-10 from the field and only missed once (5-6) at the charity stripe. Senior captain Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) finished just one shy of Martin's performance as Brooks tallied 24 points with three three-point field goals and a 7-of-8 effort at the line.

Brooks was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 20.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games.

St. Mary's (2-2) had the hot hand all day long, shooting nearly 60-percent for the game as the Seahawks posted a 62.5-field goal percentage in the second half. Behind Martin's play, the team dominated the paint and outscored Greensboro, 46-26.

The Seahawks only trailed once the entire game as Greensboro (0-4) turned around a five-point deficit early in the first half into a 17-13 lead at 9:29 on a junior forward Donavan Griffith (Greensboro, N.C./Northeast Guilford) dunk, capping an 11-2 run by the Pride. Greensboro would get no closer as St. Mary's used a 26-16 run over the final 8:31 of the first half to stake a 41-31 advantage at halftime.

Martin paced all scorers at intermission with 13 on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor while senior Simeon Howard (Jacksonville, Fla./Englewood) led the Pride with nine points.

It was all St. Mary's in the second half with the lead ballooning to 24 at 13:58 as the Seahawks opened up the final 20 minutes on an 18-4 run.

First-year Phil Newsome (Mitchellville, Md./Potomac) led the Seahawks on the boards with a season-best six rebounds while first-year guard Reggie Rouse (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) dished a season-high six assists.

Howard was the leading scorer and rebounder for Greensboro with 14 points and seven boards.

The Seahawks will be back on the hardwood next Saturday, November 28 when St. Mary's welcomes Gallaudet University to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for a non-conference game at 2:00 p.m.
