Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior captain Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) knocked down the game-winning triple with 12 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball to victory. St. Mary's posted a 59-56 non-conference triumph over Gallaudet University for its second straight win.
Sophomore guard Delaszo Smith's (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) layup put the Seahawks ahead of Gallaudet, 56-51, with 2:05 left in regulation. On the Bison's ensuing possession, Brooks picked the pocket of sophomore forward Andy Cruz (Bronx, N.Y./Truman) and drew GU's seventh team foul for a one-and-one at the opposite end of the court.
Brooks missed the first and junior center Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) grabbed the rebound, setting up senior guard Todd Bonheyo (Frederick, Md.) for a layup to pull within three at 1:26. Each side missed a field goal try before senior Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) was fouled while shooting a three-pointer. Gordon's shot was off the mark but he made all three free throws to tie the game with 35 ticks on the clock.
St. Mary's (3-2) brought the ball down and worked it around before Brooks nailed the game-winning shot. Gallaudet (0-3) turned the ball over on its final possession as Smith took the ball away from Gordon.
Brooks finished with a game-best 19 points as he connected on five attempts from downtown while sophomore forward Isaiah Martin (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park) chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds to pace the Seahawks in the win.
The game was neck-in-neck from the opening whistle with the teams trading leads five times. Gallaudet jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game before first-year guard Reggie Rouse (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) put the Seahawks on the board with a three-point shot. St. Mary's used the 30-15 run to establish a seven-point lead at 3:18.
The Bison regained the lead (32-30) at 1:10 thanks to a pair of three-pointers but two free throws by first-year guard Kyle DePollar (Potomac, Md./Montrose Christian) and a tip-in by first-year Phil Newsome (Mitchellville, Md./Potomac) as time expired sent St. Mary's into the locker room with a 34-32 advantage.
Gordon led all scorers at intermission with 12 points behind four triples while Brook paced the Seahawks with 10 and four boards. St. Mary's stretched its lead to eight in the opening minutes of the second half but a 15-4 Bison run returned the advantage to Gallaudet, 47-44, at 8:30. Martin sparked a 12-4 run with a layup at 7:51, which was capped by Smith's own layup at 2:05 for the 56-51 edge.
Gordon collected 17 points to lead the Bison while McGriff registered a double-double on 14 points and 10 caroms. Gallaudet hung around in the game as a result of a 37-32 rebounding margin and the Seahawks' poor performance at the free throw line (4-of-13).
St. Mary's will return to the hardwood on Wednesday, December 2 when the Seahawks open up Capital Athletic Conference action on the road in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The team will take on the University of Mary Washington (3-2) at 8:00 p.m.
