Box Score Baltimore, Md. – Seniors Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) each tallied nine kills as the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team succumbed to a 3-0 setback at Johns Hopkins University Tuesday night. Hopkins claimed the season-opening match with set scores of 25-15, 25-19, 25-22.
"The team had a slow start tonight against a well-coached Johns Hopkins team," stated head coach Jeremy Sands. "We had some really strong play from our middle hitters Mandy Goodspeed and Karlee Vaillant tonight. Our freshman outside hitter Meghan Kelley contributed some quality points …"
Goodspeed added two solo blocks to her nine kills, contributing a team-best 11.0 points tonight, while first-year outside hitter Meghan Kelley (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) notched five kills and six digs in her first game as a Seahawk.
St. Mary's (0-1) best set of the match was the third and final one as the Seahawks totaled 12 kills against four errors for a .267 hitting percentage. Sands continued by saying, "… while Marissa Dangler and Mia Griffiths stepped up in the third set to keep us in the match."
Seven digs apiece from juniors Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) paced the Seahawk defense tonight.
The Blue Jays (1-0) posted 34 kills, 11 service aces, and 5.5 blocks en route to their first win of the season. Sophomore Elizabeth Wuerstle (Kennett Square, Pa./Tower Hill) led the JHU offense with a match-best 11 kills while senior Stephanie Yokoyama (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) picked up a match-high 13 digs to help keep St. Mary's to a .182 hitting percentage for the match.
The Seahawks fly out to southern California Thursday morning to compete in the Pacific Coast Classic hosted by Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, and University of La Verne on September 4-5. St. Mary's will face Whittier College and Pomona-Pitzer on Friday before taking on Occidental College and George Fox University on Saturday.
