Box Score 2 Bridgewater, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team improved to 6-4 on the season with a split at Saturday's tri-match hosted by Bridgewater College. St. Mary's dropped a 3-0 decision to Randolph-Macon College before rebounding with a 3-1 win over host Bridgewater.
Head coach Jeremy Sands said, "We had a tough fight against Randolph-Macon today and we were not able to capitalize in transitions. We had good play from Allison Graf on the outside but it wasn't enough to push us over the edge."
Randolph-Macon (12-1), who received votes in this week's AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25, posted an identical score of 25-15 to sweep the Seahawks for their 10th straight win while the loss snapped St. Mary's five-match win streak.
Junior outside hitter Alli Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) paced the Seahawks in the loss with 10 kills while junior libero Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) led the defense with 10 digs. Senior setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and junior captain Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) combined for 25 assists with 13 and 12, respectively.
Sands comments on how his team regrouped and gained the victory against Bridgewater (2-10): "Our team showed some great resilience to come back and beat Bridgewater who played great defense tonight. Mia Griffiths and Meghan Kelley had some key contributions that don't show up in stats. Overall, we served well but need to clean up some of our touches in blocking and digging."
St. Mary's tallied scores of 25-13, 25-22, 25-27, 25-23 in handing Bridgewater its fifth straight loss. A. Graf was again the offensive leader for the Seahawks as she threw down a match-best 13 kills and recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a match-best 20 digs.
Defensively, four Seahawks notched double-digit digs with A. Graf leading the way. Hill followed with 15 while senior captain Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) added 14 and eight kills. M. Graf contributed her fifth double-double of the season as well with 15 assists and 10 digs plus three block assists.
The Seahawks stay on the road for their next matches as St. Mary's travels to Lynchburg, Virginia to take on Lynchburg College and Randolph College in a tri-match hosted by Randolph. St. Mary's faces Lynchburg first at 5:00 p.m. before squaring off against host Randolph at 7:00 p.m.
