Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior forward Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) tallied her sixth career game-winning goal to give the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team their second consecutive victory. Wolf's goal with 6:09 left in overtime lifted St. Mary's to a 2-1 non-conference triumph over Washington and Lee University on Sunday afternoon.
Wolf gathered the ball in the open field and moved past W&L's last defender into the circle where she pulled the ball to the right to get around first-year goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest). Wolf lost control of the ball in the circle for a bit, allowing the last General defender to regain her position, but made contact once again and sent the ball into the far left corner to seal the win at 78:51.
Today marked the fourth extra period game for the Seahawks this season and improves St. Mary's to 4-2 against the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in 2015.
The Seahawks (5-4) posted a 30-14 advantage in shots for the game while owning a 15-11 margin in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson(Arnold, Md./Broadneck) tallied four saves in the win while senior defender Emily Smithers (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) added a defensive save. Yavalar finished the match with a season-best 13 stops in the Generals' fifth loss of the season.
Following a scoreless first half, senior forward Nina Collins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) put St. Mary's on the board first at 43:17. Wolf sent a diagonal pass to the far post and Collins deflected it in for her second goal of the season.
Washington and Lee (3-5) evened up the score with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation when junior defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) tapped in a rebound off of Thompson's pads at 60:43.
St. Mary's will open up Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday, October 3 when the Seahawks host No. 16 Christopher Newport University at 12:00 p.m. in Seahawk Stadium.
The Seahawk field hockey contest kicks off the day's activities for Hawktoberfest at Family Weekend as volleyball, women's soccer and men's soccer welcome Penn State Harrisburg to campus for CAC games at 12:00, 2:00, and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
