Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. – Senior captain Nina Collins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) kept the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team undefeated Saturday afternoon, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Centre College at the University of Mary Washington Tournament.
The first half went scoreless as neither team could put on a consistent offensive front. Centre (0-1) earned seven penalty corners in the first 35 minutes but only generated two shots which were blocked or went wide. Sophomore Nicole Lertora (Olney, Md./Blake) picked up the Seahawks' only shot of the first half.
St. Mary's (2-0) closed the gap offensively in the second half, outshooting the Colonels, 4-1, and garnering four corners. Collins finally broke the scoreless tie with an unassisted tally at 45:20 for her first goal of the season. The goal resulted from Collins' scrappy play as she knocked in a loose ball after junior forward Brady Wolf's (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) shot was blocked.
The Seahawks edged Centre, 5-3, in shots for the game while the Colonels owned a 12-4 margin in corners. Neither goalkeeper made a stop in the contest but sophomore Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) improves to 2-0 in goal for St. Mary's.
St. Mary's will wrap action at the Mary Washington Tournament tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. when the Seahawks take on DePauw University, who received votes in the NFHCA Division III Preseason Poll. DePauw (0-1) enters tomorrow's game winless following a 2-1 overtime loss to No. 17 Mary Washington.
