Box Score Danville, Va. – Two goals apiece from captains Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and Claire Kostelnik (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) propelled the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to their first win of the season with a 4-0 shutout victory at Averett University on Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's (1-2) stepped off the bus raring to go as the Seahawks outshot Averett (0-1-1) by a 15-5 margin in the first half while earning a pair of corner kicks. Sawyer put her team on the scoreboard at 35:22 with an unassisted score. Sawyer's goal sent St. Mary's into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Seahawks added another 16 shots in the second half while the defensive backs limited Averett to just four. Sawyer doubled the lead with another unassisted goal at 68:06.
Kostelnik netted her two goals in less than a minute late in the game. She tallied her first of the season at 83:50, putting in a deflection off the goalkeeper. Kostelnik struck again 33 seconds later as she dribbled down the middle and slipped it past first-year Bailee Brown (Salem, Va./Salem) for the four-goal cushion.
St. Mary's finished the match with a 31-9 margin in shots while edging the Cougars, 4-3, in corner kicks.
Sophomore Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) and first-year Katie Flores (Towson, Md./Towson) split time in goal in the Seahawks' first shutout of 2015. Larkin came up with two stops in the first half while Flores made four in the final 45 minutes. Brown recorded 11 saves in Averett's first loss of the year.
St. Mary's will look to continue its winning ways on Wednesday, September 9 when the Seahawks travel to Chestertown, Maryland to face Washington College (1-0-1) under the lights at 7:00 p.m.
