Newport News, Va. – First-year forward Khalid Balogun (Bowie, Md./Bowie) scored twice Tuesday night as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team and No. 22 Christopher Newport University battled for 110 minutes to end in a 2-2 tie.

St. Mary's (Md.) 2, No. 22 Christopher Newport 2 (2OT)

How It Happened

  • It was an extremely physical contest with seven yellow cards (CNU – 4, SMC – 3) and one red card being awarded.
  • Christopher Newport struck first as senior midfielder Jimmy Grace (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) found the back of the net at 4:52.
  • Senior defender Sammy Blosser (Newport News, Va./Menchville) then missed a penalty kick wide at 9:57 that would have given the Captains an early 2-0 lead.
  • The Captains continued to pepper junior goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) with shots but Haussler stood up to the challenge with 12 of his career-best 16 saves in the first half.
  • Following a handball in the penalty box which led junior defender Zach Douglass (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) to being ejected from the game, Balogun put away the first of his two goals at 56:49 as he shot his penalty kick high into the left side.
  • CNU staked a 2-1 lead at 68:12 when senior forward Patrick Burns (Clifton Forge, Va./Allegheny) finished off a volley from junior midfielder Andrew Gogolin (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge).
  • Balogun collected his second equalizer of the night just over a minute later as he used speed to get by a CNU defender down the right side and then outside footed it off the far post.
  • Christopher Newport had a final scoring opportunity at 87:19 but Haussler stopped sophomore forward Stephen Durbin's (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) header to force overtime.
  • In the first OT, Burns' shot at 92:48 was denied by Haussler while senior midfielder Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) headed a corner kick just wide of the upper 90 at 94:39.
  • Sophomore midfielder Juwan Kearson (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) fired the final shot of the contest at 108:28 but it trickled just wide.
