St. Mary's Volleyball Wins Twice, Secures CAC Playoff Spot

Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team finished the weekend with a 3-0 record in Kelly Martin's first weekend as the head coach. After handing Southern Virginia University a 3-1 setback Friday night, St. Mary's picked up a 3-1 victory over the host Frostburg State University Bobcats (15-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-20) before sweeping Goucher College (25-10, 25-16, 25-15).

With one week remaining in the Capital Athletic Conference regular season, five of the six playoff spots have been secured. University of Mary Washington (7-0), Marymount University (5-1), Salisbury University (5-1), Christopher Newport University (5-2), and St. Mary's (5-2) have solidified playoff spots, while the sixth spot remains up for grabs.

St. Mary's (Md.) 3, Frostburg State 1 (15-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-20)

How It Happened

  • Frostburg State doubled up on St. Mary's with 18 kills as the Bobcats cruised to a 10-point win in the first set after turning around a 9-8 deficit.
  • After an early 1-1 tie, the Seahawks rolled to a 25-17 win in the second to even up the match at one set apiece.
  • St. Mary's continued to dominate in the third as the Seahawks collected a match-best 19 kills in staking a 2-1 advantage in the match.
  • In the fourth, the Bobcats opened up a 12-4 lead before St. Mary's rallied with a 13-4 run to reclaim the lead for the first since 3-2. The Seahawks were able to stave off FSU and hold on for the four-set victory.
  • Senior setter Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) recorded her sixth career triple-double with 22 assists, 17 digs, and a career-best 14 kills.

For the Seahawks (20-9, 5-2 CAC)

  • M. Graf – 22 assists, 17 digs, 14 kills
  • Senior outside hitter Alli Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) – 26 digs, 15 kills, 3 assists, 2 block assists
  • Sophomore outside hitter Meghan Kelley (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) – 13 kills, 2 digs
  • Sophomore setter Mia Griffiths (La Plata, Md./La Plata) – 25 assists, 11 digs
  • Sophomore libero Marissa Dangler (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) – 22 digs
  • Senior Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) – 17 digs
  • St. Mary's posted a .218 attacking percentage for the match with three service aces and 5.0 team blocks.

For Frostburg State (10-16, 1-5 CAC)

  • Naya Cheatem (14 kills, 8 digs); Zoe Harris (12 digs, 10 kills, 4 block assists); Ashante Corey-Bey (10 kills, 4 block assists); Madelyn Torres (39 assists, 15 digs, 3 kills); Kathryn Lough (20 digs); Karli Grimes (15 digs); Hannah Brown (11 digs); Cori Smothers (10 digs).
  • The Bobcats registered a .140 hitting percentage with one service ace and 6.0 team blocks.

St. Mary's (Md.) 3, Goucher 0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-15)

How It Happened

  • St. Mary's flew past the Gophers in posting its 11th shutout victory of the season.
  • It was all Seahawks in the first set as St. Mary's jumped out to an impressive 16-3 advantage. Block assists by A. Graf and sophomore middle blocker Hannah Krauss (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) sealed the first set win.
  • In the second, the Seahawks opened up with a 14-5 lead and a bad set by Goucher ended the set to give St. Mary's a 2-0 match favor.
  • The Gophers began the third with a 5-1 edge but the lead quickly vanished as St. Mary's put together a 7-2 to retake the upper hand in the set for good.

For the Seahawks (21-9)

  • A. Graf – 17 digs, 14 kills, 3 service aces
  • M. Graf – 20 assists, 8 kills, 5 digs, 4 block assists
  • M. Dangler – 10 digs
  • H. Krauss – 6 kills, 4 block assists
  • St. Mary's attacked at a .292 clip for the match with four service aces and 6.0 team blocks.

For Goucher (4-17)

  • Kelly Budge (6 kills, 5 digs); Olivia Rhodes (18 assists, 8 digs, 3 kills); Virginia Estes (13 digs); Meredith Johnson (10 digs, 4 kills).
  • The Gophers hit .060 for the match with two service aces and 3.0 team blocks.
