St. Mary's Women's Soccer Advances after Win over Salisbury

St. Mary's City, Md. – The third-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team knocked off sixth-seeded Salisbury University in the first round of the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Senior captain Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) netted both goals in St. Mary's 2-1 victory.

The Seahawks move on to the CAC semifinals for the second straight season and will face second-seeded Frostburg State University on Wednesday, November 2 at 6:00 p.m. St. Mary's will look to pick up its second win of the season over Frostburg and head to the championship game for the first time since 2011. The Seahawks posted a 2-1 win over FSU on October 1 in Seahawk Stadium behind three points from senior captain Claire Kostelnik (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart).

How It Happened

- The Seahawks would be the first on the scoreboard when Sawyer received a perfectly placed cross from first-year forward Gabby Encarnacion (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) at 35:38.
- St. Mary's kept the Sea Gulls scoreless in the first half and held the 1-0 lead at halftime.
- The Sea Gulls' junior forward Alex Pryor (Sparrows Point, Md./Mercy) would find the net after a swift pass from first-year forward Lydia Narum (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) in the 52nd minute to tie the game.
- As regulation was nearing the end, Sawyer dribbled around the Sea Gull defender and defender to score the game-winning goal in 89th minute.

For St. Mary's (10-6-1)
- Scorers: Sawyer (2 goals); Encarnacion (1 assist)
- Goalkeeper: Junior Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) would play 90:00 minutes and walked away with three saves.
- The Seahawks would take 13 shots (eight on goal) and have four corner kicks. 

For Salisbury (5-8-4)
- Scorers: Pryor (1 goal), Narum (1 assist)
- Goalkeeper: Junior Hope Knussman (Easton, Md./Easton) would play 90:00 minutes and have six saves to complete the contest.
- The Sea Gulls would take seven shots (four on goal) and conclude the game with three corner kicks.
