St. Mary's Volleyball Claims Fifth Seed on Senior Day

St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore outside hitter Meghan Kelley (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) paced the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks put up a tough fight against No. 12 University of Mary Washington on Senior Day. However, St. Mary's dropped a 3-0 decision (22-25, 16-25, 22-25) to the nationally-ranked Eagles in the regular-season finale.

Before the start of the match, seniors Alli and Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), Meghan Griffiths (La Plata, Md./La Plata), and Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) were honored for their dedication to the Seahawk volleyball program.

With the loss, the Seahawks will be the fifth seed in the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament. St. Mary's will take on fourth-seeded Marymount (Va.) University on Tuesday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m. During the regular-season, Marymount posted a 3-1 win over the Seahawks in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics and Recreation Center Arena.

No. 12 Mary Washington 3, St. Mary's (Md.) 0 (22-25, 16-25, 22-25)

How It Happened

  • There were six tied scores and four lead changes in the first set. M. Graf pulled the Seahawks within 23-22 with her third kill of the set but Mary Washington held on for the 1-0 lead.
  • Mary Washington jumped out to an 8-3 lead and never looked back in cruising to the nine-point win for a 2-0 match advantage.
  • St. Mary's staked a 21-17 edge and seemed poised to force a fourth set. Nonetheless, UMW rallied and picked up eight of the next nine points to get back in the win column.

For the Seahawks (21-11, 5-4 CAC)

  • Kelley – 13 kills
  • M. Graf – 21 assists, 5 kills
  • A. Graf – 18 digs, 8 kills, 3 assists, 3 service aces
  • St. Mary's posted a .186 attacking percentage for the match with five service aces and 4.0 team blocks.

For No. 12 Mary Washington (26-3, 8-1 CAC)

  • Savannah Powers (12 kills, 7 digs, 2 assists); Peyton Dunow (11 kills, 8 digs, 2 aces); Emma Olson (28 assists, 12 digs, 3 block assists, 2 kills, 2 aces); Jenna Yost (10 digs).
  • The Eagles registered a .204 hitting percentage with nine service aces and 5.0 team blocks in securing the top seed in the CAC playoffs.
