St. Mary's Men's Basketball Makes It Three in a Row on Senior Day

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – Team captains Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) and Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) once again powered the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team to victory. The duo combined for 38 points in leading the Seahawks to a 65-56 Capital Athletic Conference win over Penn State Harrisburg Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.

St. Mary's (12-11, 8-8 CAC) climbed into a three-way tie for third place with the University of Mary Washington (12-11, 8-8 CAC) and Southern Virginia University (9-14, 8-8 CAC). The final four playoff spots (seeds #3-6) remain up for grabs with three teams tied for third at 8-8, two teams (Marymount (Va.) University, Penn State Harrisburg) tied for sixth at 7-9, and Wesley College is 6-10 in CAC play.

The Seahawks honored their four seniors before the start of the game – Brooks, Donya Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College), Garrett Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding), and team manager John Chalk.

Brooks led the way with his seventh 20-point game of the season, tallying a game-best 23 points as he went 10-of-11 at the free throw line and made three triples. He also added a career-high five steals and five rebounds. Smith was the other Seahawk in double digits with 15 as he was 4-of-8 from the field with two three-pointers.

Sophomore captain Marsalis Hurley (Cheltenham, Md./Frederick Douglass) helped St. Mary's gain a +5 rebound advantage as Hurley grabbed a game-best seven boards.

The game was neck-and-neck for all 40 minutes as the biggest lead was nine held by St. Mary's with 1:55 remaining in the game. The afternoon witnessed 13 tied scores and nine lead changes.

Junior guard Jazmon Harris (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) launched a three-pointer at 5:19 of the first half for a 25-24 Harrisburg advantage – the last lead of the game for the Nittany Lions. However, the Lions did not go away quietly and first-year forward Kahlil Williams' (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) jumper knotted the game for the 10th time with 21 seconds left in the half.

First-year guard Kyle DePollar (Potomac, Md./Montrose Christian) hit 1-of-2 free throws in the final four seconds to send St. Mary's into the locker room with a 33-32 halftime lead. Smith picked up 10 of his 15 in the first half to lead all scorers while Williams' was the Lions' leader with eight.

Senior forward Arick Sodini (Manalapan, N.J./St. Johns Vianney) connected on a jumper at 14:05 to knot the contest for the final time at 40-40. From there, the Seahawks pushed a 12-4 run behind eight points from Brooks to establish an eight-point gap with 7:33 left. Harris cut the deficit to three at 6:41 with his second triple of the day but Harrisburg would get no closer.

Williams and Harris each tallied 12 points in the game to pace the Lions.

St. Mary's will look to continue its winning ways on the road for its final two games of the regular season. The Seahawks will travel first to No. 6 Christopher Newport University (22-1, 16-0 CAC) on Wednesday, February 17 for a 7:30 tip-off before heading to Wesley College (8-15, 6-10 CAC) for the regular-season finale on February 20 at 1:00 p.m.
