St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team fell just short of a victory Thursday afternoon against No. 25 McDaniel College to open up the 2016 season.
McDaniel (0-1) entered the game strong, obtaining the first two goals of the contest. Senior forward Nicole Hill (Bowie, Md./Bowie) would strike at 14:02. At 21:21, junior midfielder Abby Keen (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) would score off a corner kick to give the Green Terror a 2-0 lead for the game.
However, the Seahawks would not go down easily and would open the second half with a goal. At 51:15, first-year midfielder Gabby Encarnacion (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) would attack the goal and capitalize on a ball knocked down by the goalie to make the score 2-1.
McDaniel would score again at 60:21 to increase the score to 3-1 but the Seahawks would continue their battle. Senior Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) would take advantage of a cross from Encarnacion to create a one-goal game.
Despite the Seahawks' effort, the Green Terror would be able to score one last time as Katie Kirschenmann (Damascus, Md./Damascus) would score her second goal of the game.
The Seahawks' Katie Flores (Towson, Md./Towson) battled hard and recorded three saves. McDaniel's Sarah McDonald (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) would tally two saves and record her first win of the season.
The Seahawks will look for their first win of the season on the road as they take on Randolph-Macon College on Sunday, September 4 at 4:30 p.m.
