St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Juwan Kearson (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) lifted the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to a 3-2 come from behind win over Bridgewater (Va.) College Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Eighth Annual Seahawk Classic.

St. Mary's (Md.) 3, Bridgewater (Va.) 2

How It Happened

  • Bridgewater jumped out to an early lead when first-year Leo Alcantara (Sterling, Va./Dominion) blasted home a goal from just outside the box into the top right corner in the 10th minute.
  • The game did not see any more scoring until the 59th minute when Seahawk junior captain Sunny Chhatani (Lima, Peru/Indian Creek School [Md.]) put in a loose ball rolling in front of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
  • St. Mary's first-year player Anoi Hindle (Huntingtown, Md./ Huntingtown) would put the Seahawks up by one after he finished a shot that bounced off the keeper in the 66th minute.
  • Bridgewater would answer only a minute later when senior Max Chacon (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) would finish a cross that was sent in from the right side by teammate Tim Bedell (Greensboro, N.C./Southern Guilford).
  • Kearson would score the game-winner on a beautiful cross from Hindle.
  • The Eagles had two late opportunities to either take the lead (in the 71st minute) or equalize (in the 86th minute) but both chances were stymied by defenders Josh Akwara (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) and Karl Maier (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana).

For the Seahawks (4-0-1)

  • Scorer: Hindle (1 goal, 1 assist); Chhatani (1 goal); Kearson (1 goal).
  • Goalkeeper: Paolini (2 saves, 2 goals allowed, 90:00).
  • St. Mary's finished the game with 15 shots and four corner kicks.

For Bridgewater (1-1-2)

  • Scorer: Alcantara (1 goal); Chacon (1 goal); Bedell (1 assist).
  • Goalkeeper: Mark Davis (4 saves, 3 goals allowed, 90:00).
  • The Eagles had a total of seven shots and earned two corners on the day.

Notes

  • This is the first time the Seahawks have won the Seahawk Classic since 2011, breaking a two-year hold by Salisbury University who won back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014. No winner was determined in 2015 as one of the tournament days was cancelled due to weather.
  • In other Seahawk Classic action, Salisbury (2-0-1) holds on for 2-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus College (1-5).
  • Kearson was named the Tournament MVP.

Up next for the Seahawks

  • 9/14 at The Catholic University of America – 4:00 p.m.
  • Catholic owns the series record to the tune of 22-16-3, including a 7-0-2 mark in the last nine meetings. The Seahawks last win over CUA was a 3-0 decision on October 29, 2005.
