Ashland, Va. – Senior forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) would lead the St. Mary's College of Maryland (1-1-0) women's soccer team Sunday afternoon with her second goal of the season to defeat Randolph-Macon College (0-1-1) and receive their first win of the season.
The Seahawks and the Yellow Jackets would put up a defensive battle in the first half and would not see any goals. The Yellow Jackets would have 10 shots on goal while the Seahawks would end the first half with eight.
The second half would also prove to be an intense defensive fight. The Yellow Jackets would have a total of 11 shots to the net but would be unable to capitalize. The Seahawks would have more luck and were able to capitalize on one of the nine strikes to the net.
At 53:40, Sawyer would take to the goal after an assist from sophomore forward Jenna Pastel (Silver Spring Md./Albert Einstein Senior). That would give the Seahawks the 1-0 lead and secure their first win of the 2016 season.
Seahawks goalkeeper Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) would receive her first win, improving her record to 1-0 with five saves to complete the contest.
Randolph-Macon's senior goalie Lindsay Zachman (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) would play 45 minutes and have three saves. First-year keeper Christina Newman (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) would see action in the second half and receive the loss for the Yellow Jackets with four saves to conclude the game.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, September 7 as they take on Washington College at Seahawk Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
