St. Mary's City, Md. – Christopher Newport University's Stephen Durbin snapped the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team's five-game win streak Wednesday afternoon with his "golden goal" in the 99th minute. Today's 2-1 overtime loss is the first Capital Athletic Conference loss for St. Mary's while CNU remains unblemished at 5-0 in league action.
St. Mary's 1, Christopher Newport 2 (OT)
How It Happened
- It was a physical contest played on a wet, slippery field as both sides combined for 50 fouls and seven yellow cards.
- St. Mary's drew first blood in the 29th minute when the Seahawks awarded a penalty kick after sophomore forward Khalid Balogun (Bowie, Md./Bowie) was taken down in the box.
- Senior captain Sunny Chhatani (Lima, Peru/Indian Creek [Md.]) stepped up to the spot and scored into the top left corner for the 1-0 Seahawk lead at 28:20.
- Strong defensive play from St. Mary's kept the Captains, who outshot the Seahawks, 9-4 in the first half, off the scoreboard through halftime.
- Durbin put CNU on the board five minutes into the second half as he had a running volley right at the goal line off a cross from the right side from Jimmy Grace.
- Both sides had great opportunities to end the game in regulation but both goalkeepers made point blank saves to send the game into extra frames.
- Following CNU's eight corner kick, Derek Cook fired a shot to the middle of the goal which was initially stopped by senior captain Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) but Durbin was right there to put back the rebound with a 1:03 left in OT.
