Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team saw their 2017 campaign come to a close on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Fifth-seeded St. Mary's dropped a 7-1 decision to fourth-seeded University of Mary Washington in the first round of the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championship Tournament.

How It Happened
- Mary Washington staked a 3-0 advantage at halftime behind a goal and an assist each from Lexie Dixson and Lauren Hopkins. The Eagles held a 2-0 lead at 3:10 as UMW scored twice in a 40-second span.
- The Eagles stretched their margin to 4-0 nearly four minutes into the second half as Morgan MacCartney scored off a penalty corner.
- First-year forward Hannah Dietrich (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) finally put St. Mary's on the scoreboard at 50:08 as Dietrich finished off a pass from junior forward Sydney Cline (Frederick, Md./Linganore).
- Hopkins collected back-to-back goals in less than three minutes to increase UMW's lead to 6-1 at 54:18.
- The final blow came from an unassisted goal by Allegra Massey-Elim at 63:16.
- Senior captain Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made eight saves in her final collegiate game.
For the Seahawks (8-11)
- Scorers: Dietrich (1 goal); Cline (1 assist)
- Goalkeeper: Thompson (8 saves, 7 goals allowed, 70:00)
- St. Mary's put up 10 shots (five on goal) and earned six penalty corners.
For Mary Washington (11-7)
- Scorers: Hopkins (3 goals, 1 assist); Massey-Elim (1 goal, 1 assist); Dixson (1 goal, 1 assist); MacCartney (1 goal); Alaina Shivers (1 goal); Noor Varjabedian (1 assist0; Erin Kaila (1 assist)
- Goalkeepers: Jessica Cavolt (4 saves, 1 goal allowed, 62:10); Ivy Hollander (0 saves, 0 goals allowed, 7:50)
- The Eagles fired off 26 shots (15 on goal) and picked up 13 corners in their second straight win.
Notes
- St. Mary's eight wins this season are the most since the Seahawks notched 10 wins in 2014.
