Seahawk Volleyball Begins Conference Action on the Road

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team opened up Capital Athletic Conference action on the road. St. Mary's kicked off the conference season Friday night at No. 22 Christopher Newport University, the CAC runner-up, before traveling to the defending CAC champion, University of Mary Washington, on Saturday afternoon.

St. Mary's 0, No. 22 Christopher Newport 3 (17-25, 17-25, 21-25)

How It Happened

  • Junior outside hitter Meghan Kelley (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) paced the Seahawks on offense with eight kills and two block assists while junior captain Mia Griffiths (La Plata, Md./La Plata) contributed 21 assists.
  • Defensively, junior captain Marissa Dangler (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) led the way with a match-high 17 digs and added a pair of service aces.
  • The Seahawks never held a lead in the first two sets but managed two tied scores and one lead change early in the final game.

  • The Seahawks tallied four aces and 3.0 team blocks.

For No. 22 Christopher Newport (14-3, 1-0 CAC)

  • Tylar McGill – 14 assists, 3 digs
  • Josie Lucernoni – 15 digs, 2 assists, 2 aces
  • The Captains recorded eight aces and 7.0 team blocks.

St. Mary's 0, Mary Washington 3 (19-25, 14-25, 18-25)

How It Happened

  • Juniors Grace Seifert (Cambridge, Md./Salisbury Christian) and Hannah Krauss (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) led the Seahawks with four kills each while Krauss added two solo blocks and a block assist.
  • Dangler continued to lead the defense, this time with a match-best 14 digs.
