Virginia Beach, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team opened up 2018 at the Virginia Wesleyan University Invitational on Friday, going 1-1 in their first two matches of the new campaign. The Seahawks (1-1) started with a 3-1 loss to Geneva College (2-0) before rebounding with a 3-2 victory over Penn State Berks (0-2).
St. Mary's 1, Geneva 3 (25-23, 18-25, 16-25, 23-25)
How It Happened
- The Seahawks staked an early 1-0 lead in the match by claiming a 25-23 victory in the first set. St. Mary's, who was the only opponent to take a set from the Golden Tornadoes, totaled 11 kills in the win as three different players put down three kills each.
- Geneva responded with three consecutive set wins to finish its first day of action with a 2-0 mark.

- Kayla Coughlin – 16 digs, 4 aces
- The Golden Tornadoes tallied 71 digs, 45 kills, 13 aces, and seven total blocks (2-5).

How It Happened
- The two sides alternated wins in the first four sets before St. Mary's outlasted the Nittany Lions, 15-9, for its first win of the season.
