Gettysburg Sneaks Past St. Mary’s College Women’s Soccer

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team held their own against regionally-ranked Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the host Bullets. This is the Seahawks (6-5-3) second straight loss while Gettysburg (7-2-1) is unbeaten in four of its last five games.

How It Happened
  • The first half was relatively equal as the Bullets posted a 4-2 shot advantage while St. Mary's College owned a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • Gettysburg broke through the scoreless draw in the 33rd minute when Molly O'Shea put back a Seahawk clear from about 25 yards and the ball just sailed off the outstretched fingertips of first-year goalie Kylie Wells (Middletown, Md./Middletown), who was just off her line. Wells attempted to knock the ball out before the ball crossed the goal line but it was ruled a goal.
  • Just 20 seconds prior to Gettysburg's goal, Wells denied a fast-break opportunity for Jalia Musah.
  • Wells stopped the Bullets' other three shots to send the Seahawks into halftime with just a 1-0 deficit.
  • Gettysburg fired off nine more shots in the second half with Wells turning away nine of them to keep St. Mary's College in the game.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Bullets finished the afternoon with a 17-4 shot advantage while edging the visitors, 5-3, in corner kicks.

Top Performers
  • Senior captain Lauren Baker (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) led the Seahawks with two shots, both on goal.
  • Wells collected a season-best 10 saves, including seven in the second half, while the St. Mary's College defensive unit added a pair of team saves to limit Gettysburg to just one goal.
  • Emma Bedell paced the Bullets with four shots while O'Shea and Erika Muskus each tallied three. Maddie Cunningham needed just one save for her fifth shutout of the season.

Notes
  • This is the first meeting between the two teams in 10 years. Back on September 10, 2011, the Seahawks posted a 2-0 win over Gettysburg in St. Mary's City.
