Seahawks Take Tough Loss In First Round of McDaniel Tournament

WESTMINSTER, MD-- St. Mary's Women's Basketball team went to McDaniel College to compete in the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip Off Tournament. The Seahawks played Catholic University in their opening game of the 2 day long tournament. The team faced their second strong team of the season, losing in a difficult game. Rallying together, the Seahawks hope to play hard and bring home a win on the second day of the tournament.

St. Mary's-30, Catholic-64

How it Happened

  • After a short defensive back and forth, Catholic was able to get on the board first and tally 10 unanswered points. The Seahawks came back with a breakaway layup to put themselves on the board. St. Mary's would score 2 more points to answer Catholic's next 5 to end the first quarter, (4-15).

  • The Seahawks had little breathing room entering the second quarter as Catholic continued to turn up the heat and pull away from the Hawks. Despite the pressure from their competitors, the Seahawks kept fighting and were able to put up 6 points before time ran out. However, their effort wouldn't be enough going into halftime as Catholic now led (10-34).

  • Half time ended and the Seahawks were back on the court. The team were able to put on their highest scoring quarter yet. St. Marys was able to put up 12 needed points. However, the Cardinals kept their lead moving forward, ending the quarter (22-51).

  • Though the team seemed to be gaining steam, the fourth quarter was a difficult battle. The Seahawks were only able to tally 8 more points before the final buzzer. St. Mary's put up a strong effort to slow down the Cardinals to end the final quarter. The team tallied 14 rebounds and 4 steals in the final 10 minutes of the game. Though a stronger second half effort was shown, the Cardinals won the game with a final score of (30-64).
