No. 6 St. Mary’s College Men’s Soccer Doubles Up Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 6 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team opened up United East Conference action with their seventh consecutive victory. The Seahawks (7-0, 1-0 UEC) overcame a 2-1 deficit to post a 4-2 triumph over the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs in their inaugural United East match.
 
How It Happened
  • Sophomore forward Noah Gregerman (Silver Spring, Md./Barrie School) started the scoring for St. Mary's College as Gregerman converted a pass from sophomore forward Casey Cruz (Great Mills, Md./Leonardtown) for his first goal of the season at 37:08.
  • Morrisville netted the equalizer 12 minutes later as Chandley Elie made good on a penalty kick for his conference-leading seventh goal of the season.
  • The Mustangs then took the lead just five minutes into the start of the second half as Justin Klaczko connected with Hans Mensah for his second of the season and a 2-1 home team lead.
  • Morrisville's advantage didn't last long as senior captain Roshawn Panton (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) scored the first of his brace 90 seconds later for a 2-2 draw at 51:27.
  • Panton completed the brace at 64:35 as he put the finishing touches on a pass from junior captain Nahom Fisseha (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Carroll).
  • After having a hand in the Seahawks' first goal, Cruz found the back of the net as well at 69:51 as sophomore defender Garrett Bridgwater (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) assisted on the play.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • St. Mary's College controlled the possession game, outshooting the Mustangs, 27-8, and tallying a 9-0 margin in corner kicks.
 
Top Performers
  • Panton has now scored multiple goals in back-to-back games and has three multiple-goal games on the season.
  • Panton and Elie are tied for the conference lead with seven goals each while Panton leads the United East with 15 points and three game-winning goals.
  • Junior goalkeeper Liam deLone-Bellsey (Takoma Park, Md./Montgomery Blair) finished the game with two saves.
  • Cody Welkley kept the Mustangs in the game with 11 stops but the loss snapped Morrisville's two-game win streak.
 
Notes
  • This is the Seahawks' first-ever 7-0 start to a season in program history. In 2016 and 2019, St. Mary's College logged a 6-0-1 mark in its first seven games of the season.
