St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Sneaks Past Washington College

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Junior captain Celina Kaufman (Queenstown, Md./Kent Island) and senior forward Kelly Emge (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) each found the back of the cage as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team snapped a two-game skid Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks (3-3) earned a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Washington College Shorewomen (4-2), halting the visitors' two-game win streak.

How It Happened
  • Kaufman and St. Mary's College struck first as senior captain Gabrielle Corder (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) sent a laser into the circle from about 30 yards out and Kaufman went one-on-one with Ava Rivera, dodging to the right and firing into the far corner of the goal at 11:22 for the 1-0 lead.
  • The one-goal advantage remained for the next 37 minutes as Washington College was held without a shot over the second and third quarters.
  • Emge doubled the Seahawks' lead in the 49th minute as she finished off a cross from senior Kate Stevens (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield).
  • Washington College avoided the shutout when Julianna Sterling crossed a pass from the left and Kat Esposito deflected the ball into the cage at 53:45.
