The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team had an action packed weekend in Chestertown, MD as they faced off in two matches this Saturday Afternoon. The Seahawks started their day off against the Washington College Shorewomen at 12pm. The Seahawks fought hard, taking the Shorewomen to five sets but unfortunately fell in their first matchup. Waiting to challenge the Hawks were the Notre Dame Gators. The Gators quickly took control over the Seahawks and were able to sweep the match beating St. Mary's in three sets.

St. Mary's-2 Washington-3

St. Mary's-0 Notre Dame-3

How it Happened

  • Having home court advantage propelled the Shorewomen through the first set and made sure the Seahawks knew they meant business in this year's matchup; taking the first set (19-25). In 2019 Washington College swept the Seahawks in three sets and the Hawks were determined to not let that happen again. St. Mary's was relentless in the second set and caught Washington on their heels, easily taking the second set (25-14). The Shorewomen were able to flip the script in set 3 and beat the Seahawks (15-25). Entering set four both teams proved they had what it takes to win and both brought out their best performance yet, making this the closest match yet. In the end the Seahawks took over and secured set four (25-23). The fifth set would prove to be just as difficult as the fourth. Both teams brought the same intensity and went back and forth until Washington was able to take the final point, defeating the Seahawks (15-13) and winning the match.

  • After watching the Seahawks battle during a tough competition in their first match the Gators knew they would be in for a challenging match. The Seahawks brought their momentum from their first match and came out strong, ready to bring a win home to the nest. Despite their best efforts, the Lady Hawks would fall in the first set (17-25). Going into the second set St. Mary's kicked it into fifth gear and pushed Notre Dame to the brink. However, the Gators would not crack and were able to come up with set two (25-27). Set three would solidify the Seahawks fate as the Gators were able to keep up and beat St. Mary's (21-25).
