Women’s Soccer Ties with Morrisville State in Overtime

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - Today (Sept 18) the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team (3-2-2, 0-0-1 UEC) took on their first in-conference match of the season in their new conference, the United East. The Seahawks traveled to Morrisville, N.Y. to take on the Mustangs. The two teams entered double overtime but ended with a tie, 1-1.

How it Happened
  • The Seahawks started strong offensively, firing off four shots in the first 15 minutes of regulation time. In the 15th minute, Ashley Yurich found the back of the net by way of Gabby Manning sending a ball inside the box on a corner kick. 
  • St. Mary's College took an early lead and was able to tally three more shots in the half. The Seahawks outshot the Mustangs in the first half 7 to 2. Entering halftime, the Seahawks were leading 1-0.
  • The Seahawks started the second half with gusto, getting off five shots in the first 23 minutes of the half. In the 72nd minute of regulation, Madison Pelton fired off a shot that got past Seahawk defense and goalkeeper, Kylie Wells; bringing the score to 1-1. 
  • Yurich and Ella Raines contributed two more shots trying to break the tie but they fell just wide. Regulation time ended and the match entered overtime minutes. In the first two minutes of the first overtime, Yurich fired off a shot which was saved by Mustang's goalkeeper, Meaghan Miller. 
  • The Seahawks took five shots compared to Morrisville State's zero. After ten minutes of play, the first overtime ended and the match entered the second overtime period. Flor Katz-Starr contributed the only shot for the Seahawks in the second ten-minute overtime. After 110 minutes of play, the Mustangs and Seahawks declared a draw, 1-1.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Seahawks tallied 20 shots this afternoon with eight different shooters. Yurich and Raines led the team in shooting against the Mustangs with six apiece. 
  • Megan Tazza and Julia Faranetta contributed two shots each, while Manning, Katz-Starr, Nefret Perunko, and Mary Quinn added one each. 
  • Wells added one save to her season total of ten this afternoon, and now holds a save percentage of 90.9%.
