Four Second-Half Goals Lifts Christopher Newport over St. Mary’s College Field Hockey

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team (3-5) faced former Capital Athletic Conference/Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference opponent, Christopher Newport University, Saturday afternoon and dropped a tough 4-0 decision to the Captains (4-4) in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened
  • St. Mary's College edged the host Captains, 5-3, in shots and, 3-2, in penalty corners in the first period but Gabi Gray made three stops in a 90-second span to keep it scoreless in the first 15 minutes of action.
  • Shots and corners were equal in the second frame at two and one apiece, respectively, and the two sides headed into halftime in a scoreless draw.
  • The CNU offense really got going in the third stanza, firing off six shots and finally breaking through in the 42nd minute as Mauri Ware assisted on Vivian Pope's first goal of the season.
  • Christopher Newport continued to roll in the fourth as the Captains unleashed three goals in a 10-minute span to wrap up their third win in the last four games.
  • The Seahawks were limited to three shots and two corners over the final 30 minutes.
