Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team suffered their first loss of the 2021 campaign Sunday afternoon, dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 non-conference decision to the visiting York College of Pennsylvania Spartans.
How It Happened
- Following a scoreless first half which saw York outshot the Seahawks, 13-4, the Spartans landed on the scoreboard first just over two minutes into the second half. Mya Gerena sent in a diagonal pass from the top of the circle just past the penalty stroke spot and Hannah Huffman redirected the ball into the lower right corner for her second goal of the season.
- St. Mary's had a great scoring chance to knot the game at 1-1 with under 12 minutes left in the game when sophomore midfielder Audrey Dickens (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) used a reverse stick to send senior defender Sophie Carlson's (Churchville, Md./C. Milton Wright) pass into the far corner but the goal was called back as the ball was hit with the back of the stick.
- The Spartans doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Libby Wild corralled a rebounded save and drove it into the lower right corner of the goal.
- The Seahawks earned back-to-back penalty corners and sophomore forward Hayden Kesner (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) found the back of the cage on the second corner, cutting the deficit in half in the 56th minute. Senior captain Gabrielle Corder (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) pushed a pass towards the near post and Kesner was there to deflected it in for her second score of the season.
