St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team (7-9) fell this afternoon (Jan. 28) to United East Conference rival Penn State Abington (6-10). The final score was 58 51, dropping the Seahawks' record to 5-4 in United East Conference play.
How It Happened
- The Seahawks came out of the gate fast, scoring the first 14 points of the quarter and leading 24-11 after the first 10 minutes of basketball. Stephanie Howell set the tone early and with nine points in the quarter, while Karon Williams contributed eight points and three assists. St. Mary's was able to shoot close to 30% from behind the three-point arc in the quarter.

Penn State Abington responded with a run of their own, scoring nine straight to begin the second quarter of action. The Nittany Lions used the run to flip the momentum in the contest, cutting the Seahawk deficit to just five before halftime. The Seahawks continued to lean on Stephanie Howell and Karon Williams offensively and were able to go into the halftime break with a slight advantage. St. Mary's shot 20% from the field in the first half of the game.
- The third quarter of play was very similar to the second. St. Mary's was able to hold on to the lead most of the quarter, but fell behind in the closing seconds to trail by one going into the break. Howell continued to shine for the Seahawks and had a team high 15 points at the end of the third quarter.

The Nittany Lions were able to gain momentum and a five-point lead before Cameron Mangold knocked down a clutch layup to cut the deficit to just two with five minutes left. The Seahawks were unable to chip enough away at the deficit and Penn State Abington hung on to win 58-51 thanks to the strong effort of Angela Sanders, who contributed points for the Nittany Lions. The Seahawks ended up shooting 20% from the field in the contest. St. Mary's was unable to avenge and loss from earlier in the season at the hands Penn State Abington
