St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (1-1) kicked off the Seahawk invitational today (Nov. 11) against the visiting St. Joseph's University Brooklyn Bears (1-0). The Seahawks fell to the Bears 69-54 in the opening round  Â
How It Happened
-
Both teams struggled in the early going to get points on the board, as neither the Seahawks or Bears could get on the board until the 8:03 mark of the first quarter. The Seahawks were eventually able to find their footing, scoring seven points in the final two minutes to take a 15-9 lead going into the first break. Karon Williams had five points, doing most of her damage from the line, while Kristin Sabatini chipped in four points utilizing the mid range game.Â
-
The Bears jumped out on the Seahawks early in the second quarter, scoring the first eight points of the period and taking their first lead of the night. St. Joe's continued to build a lead, primarily using the three point ball. The Bears shot an impressive 4-6 from behind the arc in the quarter and led the Seahawks 31-24 at half. Karon Williams and Stephanie Howell combined for 12 points over the first 20 minutes.
-
Shot making was an issue for St. Mary's to begin the third quarter, as St. Joes outscored them 12-3 over the first five minutes of play. The Bears did a nice job having active hands and closing out on shooters, which proved to be very disruptive for the Seahawks. St. Joe's also continued to be a threat from behind the arc, knocking down another three long balls in the quarter. The Bears took a 52-31 lead into the last 10 minutes of basketball.
-
The Seahawks and Bears traded baskets for the most part over the first half of the fourth quarter. Samantha Blaylock then sparked a six point run that began with her converting a three point play, which was immediately followed by a Rachel Manning three pointer to trim the lead to 13. Moment's after the Bears extended their lead back to 16, Samantha Blaylock hit back to back jump shots, one being from behind the three point line, to give the Seahawks a chance to cut the lead to single digits. Despite a very strong effort from the St. Mary's squad in the fourth quarter, the comeback attempt fell short, as the Seahawks ran out of time in the final minutes of the game. St Joseph's Brooklyn held on to win 69-54
