Women's Basketball Kicks Off United East Conference Play with a Victory

Abington, PA-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (4-2) kicked off United East Conference Play today (Dec. 3) on the road with a trip to Penn State Abington (1-6). The Seahawks used a dominant third quarter to pull away from the Nittany Lions, winning by a score of 58-49.

How It Happened

  • The Seahawks found themselves trailing after a first quarter that didn't see a lot of offensive action. The Nittany Lions held a 10-8 advantage after the first ten minutes. Karon Williams scored the first five St. Mary's points of the game before Samantha Blaylock knocked down a triple in the final minute of the period.

  • Despite playing a first quarter where points were hard to come by, the Seahawks found their offensive rhythm in a large way in the second quarter. St. Mary's went on a 12-0 run that spanned over four minutes. Samantha Blaylock and Rachel Manning both connected on long balls during that stretch and the Seahawks turned opportune defense into offense. St. Mary's led 29-23 going into the intermission.

  • The Seahawks began the third quarter much like they did the first, playing a more defensive style of game. St. Mary's could only string together nine points in the period, but held Penn State Abington to just 13. The Nittany Lions trimmed the lead to two going into the final ten minutes.

  • Karon Williams and Samantha Blaylock came through in a huge way to begin the fourth quarter, hitting three pointers on back to back possessions to extend the Seahawk lead to seven. Every time the Nittany Lions threatened to close the gap and regain momentum, a Seahawk would come through with a big shot, especially Samantha Blaylock, who knocked down five three pointers in the contest. Karon Williams hit a clutch jump shot with under a minute left and Samantha Blaylock made a couple free throws to seal the deal for St. Mary's. The Seahawks come out on top, 58-49.

Inside the Box Score

  • Samantha Blaylock finished with a team high 19 points

  • Karon Williams was doing it all for the Seahawks, scoring 14 points, corralling seven rebounds, and dishing out three assists

  • Stephanie Howell controlled the boards for the Seahawks, finishing with 10. Howell also chipped in eight points.
