St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Triumphant on Senior Night

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team wrapped up the regular season Wednesday night (Oct. 25) with a victorious Senior Night. St. Mary's College (11-5, 6-0 AEC) overcame a 1-0 deficit and posted a 5-1 Atlantic East Conference win over Gwynedd Mercy University (2-14, 1-5 AEC).

St. Mary's registered its third straight undefeated regular season conference record to pick up the program's third consecutive Atlantic East Conference regular-season championship title.

After the game, the Seahawks celebrated their five seniors – Ashley Berrol (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), Audrey Dickens (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), Anna Eaton (Silver Spring, Md./Blake), Jill Hayden (Abell, Md./Chopticon), and Hayden Kesner (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) – for their years of dedication and leadership.

How It Happened
  • Gwynedd Mercy drew first blood as Laura Filchner poked one past first-year Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) at 10:35 for a 1-0 Griffin lead.
  • The Seahawks responded at the end of the first quarter when sophomore forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) put back a rebound to send the two sides into the second period deadlocked at 1-1.
  • Dickens gave St. Mary's a 2-1 advantage at 23:07 as she ripped a shot off a penalty corner. Eaton inserted the ball up to junior captain Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Md./Northwestern Lehigh), who passed it to the right to Dickens.
  • St. Mary's headed into halftime with a two-goal lead following first-year midfielder Alyssa Riggleman's (Sudlersville, Md./Queen Anne's County) fourth goal of the season. Ziegler set up Riggleman with a pass from the near post to the right side where Riggleman one-timed it for the goal.
  • Sophomore forward Briana Allen's (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) fourth goal of the season put the Seahawks ahead 4-1 at 38:52 as Allen tipped in Ziegler's pass.
  • Kesner tallied St. Mary's final goal of the game off a penalty corner at 52:29. Ziegler inserted the ball up to Horn, who fired a shot towards the near post and Kesner tipped it in for the 5-1 final.
