St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (2-0) hosted Penn State Lehigh Valley (0-1) for the opening round of the annual Jamie L. Roberts Memorial tournament. The Seahawks came out on top 60-48 to advance to the championship game.Â
How It Happened
-
The Seahawks led 12-9 after the first 10 minutes of play. Sam Blaylock was the difference maker for St. Mary's in the quarter, connecting on back to back three pointers to capture the momentum for the Seahawks. Amira Whitaker and Stephanie Howell both contributed a bucket a piece as well.Â
-
St. Mary's began to find more consistent offense midway through the second quarter. This was highlighted when Olivia Liszt and Rayna Miller made back to back three pointers to push the Seahawk lead to 11. Miller would finish with five points in the quarter, while Liszt would go on to knock down another triple to give her six points before the half. The Seahawks would lead by seven going into the break.
-
Every time it felt like the Nittany Lions could capture the momentum in the third quarter, the Seahawks had an answer. St. Mary's followed every made basket by Penn State Lehigh Valley with a made shot of their own, never allowing the Nittany Lions to go on a run. Tray Mobray started to get in the mix with two made layups and Olivia Hedrick also contributed four points in the quarter. Sam Blaylock continued to connect on the three pointer as the Seahawks enjoyed a comfortable 13 point lead going into the last 10 minutes.
-
The Seahawks played stout defense to finish the game as they held the Nittany Lions to just nine fourth quarter points. Sam Blaylock cashed in on her fourth made three pointer of the contest and Amira Whitaker continued to have a very strong game as St. Mary's put the finishing touches on a 60-48 victory.Â
