WASHINGTON, D.C. – Guards
Daryn Alexander (Twinbrook, Md./Richard Montgomery) and
Micah Henry (Laurel, Md./Hammond) each poured in a game- and season-best 22 points Saturday afternoon (Nov. 18) in the second game of the DC/MD Challenge hosted by Gallaudet University. St. Mary's College (1-3) put together a second-half comeback but endured a 67-65 setback to The Catholic University of America (3-0).
How It Happened
- A steal and layup by Sean Neylon gave Catholic its biggest lead of the game, 48-26, with 12:59 remaining in the game.
- Senior captain Hollique Johnson (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) hit a jumper at 12:41 to start the Seahawks' 33-10 run, which gave St. Mary's its first lead of the game, 59-58, at 4:44, but Alexander and Henry carried the team's rally with 16 and 10 points, respectively, during the comeback, including three triples by Alexander.
- The two teams traded leads for the next two minutes before a pair of free throws by senior forward Gary Grant (Washington, D.C./Thomas Stone [Md.]) gave the Seahawks a 63-61 edge at 2:41.
- Catholic then went 5-for-6 at the charity stripe to regain a 66-63 advantage with 19 seconds to go but Alexander pulled St. Mary's within one with nine ticks on the clock.
- Jesse Hafemeister missed the second of two free throws and Johnson grabbed the defensive rebound with five seconds left in regulation. First-year guard James Lerner's (Herndon, Va./Maret) jumper as time expired was just off the mark.
- Catholic outscored the Seahawks 30-19 in the first half as the Cardinals shot 35.7-percent (10-28) from the field, including three three-pointers, and went 7-of-9 from the free throw line.
- St. Mary's struggled in the first 20 minutes to find its offensive rhythm, connecting on just six field goals and going o-fer from downtown in seven attempts, and CUA capitalized for an 11-point halftime lead.
