Seahawks Men’s Soccer, Your 2023 United East Champions!

ROSEMONT, Pa. – Just three days removed from being crowned the 2023 United East Conference Volt Division Champions, the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team captured the overall United East Conference championship title Saturday afternoon (Nov. 4).

St. Mary's College (11-6-4), the fourth seed in the Volt Division, outlasted Rosemont College (11-4-3), the United East Skye Division Champion and the No. 1 seed in the Skye Division, 5-4, in penalty kicks after the two sides played 110 minutes and ended in a 2-2 draw. This is St. Mary's third conference title and second in three days. The first came in 1989 when the Seahawks won the Chesapeake Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 2-1 victory at Marymount (Va.) University.

Fifth-year captain Zack Glime (Annapolis, Md./Key) was named the Tournament MVP after scoring five goals, including the game-winner at No. 2 seed Penn State Harrisburg for the divisional title, in four tournament games.

The Seahawks are also earning the program's first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Tournament by virtue of gaining the league's automatic qualifying bid with today's victory. The 2023 NCAA DIII men's soccer selection show and bracket release will stream live on NCAA.com at 2 p.m. ET on Monday, Nov. 6.

How It Happened
  • Rosemont went first in the shootout and each side made their first three PKs.
  • Senior captain Matthew Kopsidas (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) came up big on the Ravens' fourth attempt as Kopsidas made a diving save to his left to deny junior Clayton Crosse, who scored twice during regulation.
  • Senior forward Jason Caro (Lanham, Md./Good Counsel) then gave St. Mary's a 4-3 as Caro found the bottom left corner before the Ravens evened up the tally at 4-4 with their fifth PK.
  • Senior captain Lucca Mazzola (Pasadena, Md./Spalding) clinched the title for the Seahawks as Mazzola found the right side of the goal and gave his team the 5-4 edge.
  • Glime put St. Mary's on the scoreboard less than six minutes into the game as he outhustled two Raven defenders to a 50-50 ball and then ripped a shot from the right side of the box into the lower far left corner for a 1-0 Seahawk lead at 5:17.
  • Kopsidas and junior goalie Gunner Hoffman were busy in the first half as the two sides combined for 24 shots in the first 45 minutes. Kopsidas turned away seven of Rosemont's 16 shots while Hoffman finished the half with five stops.
  • Glime doubled the Seahawks' advantage with his second of the afternoon at 49:47 when junior forward Alex Ochman (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) brought the ball up on the right side and then found Glime with a flat pass to his left. Glime settled the ball and finished into the lower right corner from about 20 yards out.
  • Crosse netted his first of the day 34 seconds after Glime's second goal and then found the back of the net again in the 78th minute as he chipped first-year Nicholas Lachawiec's pass over Kopsidas' head to knot the match at 2-all.
  • St. Mary's outshot the Ravens, 6-2, over the two 10-minute extra frames but Hoffman came up with three saves and Kopsidas made two to force penalty kicks.
