Abington, PA - The St. Mary's College Volleyball team traveled to Abington Pennsylvania to take on the Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington in the first round of the United East Conference Tournament Volt Division playoffs. The Seahawks took down the Nittany Lions 3 - 1.

How it Happened

The Seahawks started the first set off in a six-point deficit (7-1). However, the Seahawks worked hard to recover. The gap stretched as the Seahawks were behind the Nittany Lions 15-8 later in the set. Head Coach Alexis Calloway called a timeout and regrouped the Seahawks. They immediately came out and notched a kill from Arielle Lubeck and a service ace from Camilla Galeano. Kills started to fall from Grace Caudell and Meghan Stevens which helped tie the set up 24-24. The Seahawks closed out the first-set win with a kill from Arielle Lubeck.

While the second set started with a kill by Ellie Matthews, the Seahawks struggled to keep a lead. The two teams stayed tied through the ninth point but the Nittany Lions pulled away (15-10). The Seahawks were unable to catch up to the Nittany Lions and fell in the second set 25-19.

The Seahawks refused to pump the breaks and went full speed ahead in the third set. Alayna Sievert immediately notched a service ace to start the third set. While the set was initially tied (4-4) the Nittany Lions attempted to get ahead of the Seahawks (10-7). The Seahawks refused to give up and worked hard to tie the set again (15-15). They went on to have seven unanswered points, creating a 24-16 lead. While the Nittany Lions attempted to answer, the Seahawks notched the third set with a kill from Julia Bobrowski 25-17.

The fourth and final set began similar to the other three - a close back and forth between the Seahawks and the Nittany Lions (6-6). The Seahawks notched six uninterrupted points that included kills from Meghan Stevens and Jillian Zukley. This lead propelled the Seahawks forward and enabled them to create a nine-point gap between them and the Nittany Lions (18-9). The Seahawks closed out their first playoff match by winning the fourth set 25-17.
