Five Seahawks Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Picks up First United East Conference Win

St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (6-2) hosted the Lancaster Bible College Chargers (1-6) for their first United East Conference Match-up of the year. The Seahawks used a big second half to surge past the Chargers, winning 73-69.

How It Happened

  • The Seahawks had a slow start offensively and found themselves trailing 16-8 after the first quarter. Tray Mobray, Melanie Aguilar, and Amira Whitaker all scored in the period, with Mobray contributing the most with four points.

  • St. Mary's started the second quarter strong, as an Olivia Liszt three pointer cut the Charger lead to just seven. The Seahawks would eventually trim the Lancaster Bible lead to just two after eight straight Amira Whitaker points, including back-to-back three pointers. Unfortunately for St. Mary's, Lancaster Bible ended the final three minutes of the half on a 12-0 run and took a 38-23 lead into the locker room.

  • Not only did the offense come alive for St. Mary's in the second half, but the defense did as well. The Seahawks outscored the Chargers 19-10 in the quarter and got back to within striking distance. St. Mary's closed out the third quarter on a 16-3 run that saw contributions from the entire team. The Seahawks ended the quarter by scoring six points in the final 12 seconds that was emphasized by a Sam Blaylock three pointer. Melanie Aguilar and Olivia Liszt also were heavy contributors in the Seahawk momentum flip.

  • The fourth quarter is where the Seahawks really flexed their muscles offensively. St. Mary's scored 31 points over 10 minutes, a season high. Lancaster Bible would fight back and was able to keep their lead between four and seven points for a majority of the quarter, but the Seahawks would prove to be too much to handle. Tray Mobray made it happen on both sides of the court, converting on a lay up with around a minute left, which was followed by a steal and another layup to cut the Charger lead to just two. With 49 seconds left and the game tied up, Sam Blaylock knocked down a massive three point shot to tie the game at 67 a piece. After a defensive stand, Olivia Liszt converted on the biggest shot of the game, converting on a three pointer with 22 seconds left to give St. Mary's their first lead of the contest. The Seahawks held it down on defense and made their free throws down the stretch and hung on, 73-69.
