ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Team captains
Daryn Alexander (Twinbrook, Md./Richard Montgomery) and
Hollique Johnson (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) recorded double-doubles as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon (Dec. 2). St. Mary's College (4-4, 1-0 UEC) knocked off defending United East Conference champion, Lancaster Bible (2-4, 1-1 UEC), 81-79, to open United East action with a win.
How It Happened
- It was a tight first half with the biggest lead of the first 20 minutes being a six-point lead three times by Lancaster Bible, first at the nine-minute mark, next at 7:49, and again at 6:55.
- Back-to-back three-pointers by Johnson and first-year guard James Lerner (Herndon, Va./Maret) knotted the game at 20-20 with 6:12 to go in the half.
- The Chargers could not shake St. Mary's, mustering a 30-26 lead at 1:48 before the Seahawks used a 5-2 spurt to pull within one with 31 ticks on the clock.
- Maureon Tisdale-Couch sent LBC into the break with a 34-31 advantage with a layup as time expired.
- St. Mary's claimed its first lead since the 18:15 minute mark in the first half as sophomore guard Micah Henry's (Laurel, Md./Hammond) jumper put the Seahawks up 35-34 less than two minutes into the second half.
- The teams traded leads for the next five minutes before an Alexander triple at 13:04 handed St. Mary's the lead for good. Alexander's bucket sparked a 26-15 run over the next eight minutes and the Seahawks boasted their biggest lead of the game, 73-60, with 5:01 left in the game.
- Lancaster Bible continued to battle, and Luke Rumbaugh closed the gap to two (77-75) with 56 seconds to go as Rumbaugh's four-point play capped a 15-4 run by the Chargers.
- LBC missed three of its final five shots while the Seahawks went 4-for-6 at the free throw line for the 81-79 final.

- The Chargers notched a +6-turnover margin, but it was the host Seahawks who efficiently capitalized on the turnovers with 19 points off the 14 LBC miscues.

- Johnson had himself a game as he led all rebounders with a career-best 18 boards and contributed a season-high 16 points for his second double-double of the season.
- Alexander finished with 12 points and a season-best 10 caroms while adding four assists and three steals.
- Henry put up a team-best 18 points plus four rebounds, a career-high three steals, and two assists.
- Senior forward Gary Grant (Washington, D.C./Thomas Stone [Md.]) came off the bench to chip in 10 points and eight rebounds while Lerner ended the afternoon with 10 points as well.
- In his first career start, sophomore forward Luke Adgei (Dumfries, Va./St. John Paul the Great) collected career-bests of nine points and five boards.
Lancaster Bible Game Notes
- The Chargers received 42 points from their bench players.
- Connor Storr paced all scorers with 19 points while Seth Beers added 16 points and eight rebounds in Lancaster Bible's first conference loss of the season.
