Betch Has a Day as St. Mary’s College Women’s Lacrosse Wins Home- and Season-Opener

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Sophomore attacker Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) put up career-bests of nine goals and 10 points Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18) as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team was victorious in their home- and season-opener. St. Mary's College (1-0) weathered a fourth-quarter rally by Stockton University (0-1) and held on for the 18-13 win.
 
How It Happened
  • It was 2-2 after the first period as two Stockton goals sandwiched a pair of Seahawk goals by sophomore midfielder Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and Betch.
  • St. Mary's stepped it up in the second quarter as the home team used a 6-2 frame to take an 8-4 lead into halftime behind Betch's three goals and an assist in this quarter. Mary McLaughlin put a stop to the Seahawks' 5-0 run with a woman-up goal with 2:03 remaining in the first half.
  • Two consecutive Horton goals and one from junior attacker Bella Dunigan (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) gave St. Mary's a 3-0 start to the third frame. A Mary Meduri tally interrupted the Seahawks' run before Betch notched four of the next six goals to put her team up 15-7 with 12:38 remaining in the game.
  • Stockton rattled off five unanswered goals over a six-minute span, including three woman-up scores, to pull within three with 6:23 left in regulation.
  • The Ospreys turned the ball over five times in the final minutes of the game and St. Mary's closed out the contest with a 3-1 push to seal the deal.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Seahawks outshot the visitors, 31-26, while turnovers were equal at 20 apiece. Five different Seahawks forced two turnovers each to cause 14 of Stockton's 20 turnovers.
  • St. Mary's won the battle in the circle with a 21-14 margin in draw controls as Betch gained nine draws.
  • Stockton edged their hosts, 22-20, on ground balls while the Seahawks completed 13 of their 16 attempted clears. The Ospreys struggled at times to get the ball out of its defensive end, going 16-for-25 on its clears.

  • Horton ended with a career-tying five goals plus five draws and a career-best two caused turnovers.
  • Dunigan and first-year attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) each chipped in two goals and one helper.
  • Junior goalie Maddie Clemmer (Middletown, Md./Middletown) collected 10 stops in the win.

  • Meduri paced the Ospreys with five goals while McLaughlin contributed four goals and two assists.
  • Jordan Hawkes took the loss in goal, making seven stops in Stockton's season-opening loss.
