Seahawks Women’s Lacrosse Doubles Up Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 on the young 2023 campaign Friday night (Feb. 24). St. Mary's College (2-0) used a six-goal fourth quarter to post a 16-8 non-conference road win over University of Lynchburg (0-2).
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks went down 4-0 within the first 10 minutes of the game before back-to-back goals in a span of 76 seconds put St. Mary's on the scoreboard and cut the deficit to 4-2. Lynchburg tacked on one more with 57 seconds to go to take a 5-2 lead into the second quarter.
  • St. Mary's won the second frame, 4-1, including sophomore attacker Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) scoring a woman-up goal with 1:45 remaining in the half to send the two sides into halftime in a 6-6 deadlock.
  • Despite the Hornets netting two of the first three goals of the third period, the Seahawks began to distance themselves from the hosts with three unanswered goals in the final five minutes of the third.
  • The visitors put the game to bed in the fourth, firing off six more scores to stretch their run to 9-0.
  • The St. Mary's defense held Lynchburg scoreless over the final 15 minutes of the game as junior goalie Maddie Clemmer (Middletown, Md./Middletown) made four stops.

  • Junior defender Rachael Freeman (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) contributed to the defensive effort with a season-best four ground balls and one caused turnover.
  • Clemmer finished the game with eight saves and two ground balls.
 
Lynchburg Game Notes
  • Sydney Dumas and Libby Kennedy led the Hornets with two goals each.
  • Julia Broughton took the loss in goal, making seven stops in 54 minutes as Lynchburg's remains winless on the young campaign.
