SALEM, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the 2023 season Sunday afternoon (Feb. 26) despite four goals from
sophomore midfielder
Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton). In facing its first ranked opponent this year, St. Mary's College (2-1) came up on the short end of a 16-9 loss to No. 18/25 Roanoke College (2-0) in non-conference action.
How It Happened
- Horton netted the first goal of the game before Roanoke welcomed the Seahawks with four unanswered goals to stake a 4-1 lead with 3:42 left in the first quarter. Junior attacker Bella Dunigan (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) put an end to the Maroons run with her fourth goal of the season, trimming the deficit to 4-2 going into the second frame.
- St. Mary's edged the hosts, 3-2, in the second period as Horton scored twice and sophomore attacker Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) tallied two assists. Roanoke headed into halftime with a one-goal lead (6-5).
- Roanoke held the Seahawks to just one goal off the stick of Dunigan in the third stanza, which broke up the Maroons' four-goal performance, and pulled the visitors within 8-6 with 7:23 left in the third.
- The Maroons, who ended the third on a 2-0 run, rattled off five more to stretch their lead to 15-6 with 6:23 remaining in the game. St. Mary's got three back as Betch, Horton, and senior captain Lily Davison (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) all found the back of the net to make it a six-goal deficit. Roanoke tacked on one more with nine ticks on the clock for the 16-9 final.
