Women's Basketball Wraps Up Season in United East Semifinals

Morrisville, NY-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (17-8) took on the Penn State Harrisburg Nittany Lions (17-9) in the opening round of the United East Conference Tournament. The Third Seeded Nittany Lions were able to take down the Second Seeded Seahawks by a final score of 71-54.

How It Happened

  • Not much separated the two teams in the early going, as the largest lead held by either team in the first quarter was six points. Stephanie Howell had a very impactful opening 10 minutes, making her presence felt in the rebounding game, while also contributing five points. Amira Whitaker also started the game fast, picking up five points, including three from behind the arc. The Nittany Lions held a 13-11 advantage after a back and forth first period.

  • The second quarter started with a Harrisburg run that gave them a four point edge, but was followed by a 9-0 stretch by St. Mary's to recapture the lead for the Seahawks. Tray Mobray knocked down three huge buckets, two from the mid range and one from in close, while Karon Williams connected from deep to help swing the momentum back in favor of the Seahawks. St. Mary's led 26-22 going into the halftime break.

  • The Nittany Lions and Seahawks would trade baskets to start out the new half with both teams struggling to take a strong hold of the momentum. Karon Williams came out of the locker room ready to go and gave the Seahawks the spark they needed offensively, making things happen from all over the court. Williams utilized the mid range jump shot, as well and the three point ball to get into double figure scoring. The Nittany Lions closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run and took a 45-36 lead into the final 10 minutes.

  • .Karon Williams continued to fight and scrap to keep the Seahawks in the ball game, scoring 12 of the Seahawks' 18 fourth quarter points. Tray Mobray also continued to give the St. Mary's squad an offensive spark, chipping in the additional six points in the quarter. Despite the best efforts of Williams and Mobray, the Seahawks could not overcome the Harrisburg lead and ultimately fell, 71-54.
