St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (13-6) took on the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions (6-13) in a Friday night United East Conference Tilt. St. Mary's was able to come away with the win, 71-68.
How It Happened
-
The Seahawks hung on to a 13-12 lead after one quarter of play. Karon Williams was able to hit a jump shot as time expired to give St. Mary's a one point edge. Williams scored five of the Seahawks' final seven points to help keep momentum going into the second quarter.
-
Karon Williams started right where she left off and knocked down a jump shot to start the quarter, which was followed by a Tray Mobray layup to push the Seahawk lead to five. St. Mary's continued to stay hot through the middle stretch of the second period and saw five different players score during that time. The Seahawks led by as much as nine, but could never fully pull away from the Nittany Lions, who stayed within striking distance a majority of the quarter. Abington ended the half on a small run and recaptured the lead going into the locker room. St. Mary's trailed by three going into the new half.Â
-
St. Mary's was able to recapture the lead after an 8-0 run that was fueled entirely by Sam Blaylock. Blaylock was able to cash in from behind the three point line, as well as convert on her free throws and knock down a jump shot to give her team back the lead. Once the Seahawks regained the advantage, they never looked back and even extended their lead to double digits thanks to a Karon Williams made three pointer. The Seahawks outscored the Nittany Lions 22-10 in the third quarter and controlled the momentum going into the last 10 minutes.Â
-
The Nittany Lions were able to respond and trim the score back to a one possession game midway through the period. Despite the game getting closer, the Seahawks never lost their composure and had a response for just about every shot the Nittany Lions made. One of those instances came when Karon Williams connected on a contested mid range jumper to get the Seahawks back up to a two possession lead. Sam Blaylock and Stephanie Howell both went 2-2 on back to back free throw line trips in the final minute after nice defensive stands to seal the deal for the Seahawks. St. Mary's took it, 71-68.Â
