Seahawks Women’s Lacrosse Drops First Game in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team suffered their third straight setback Monday afternoon (March 13). St. Mary's College (3-4) fell 16-9 to Denison University (2-4) at Washburn Field on the campus of Colorado College despite a season second-best 13 caused turnovers.
 
How It Happened
  • After Denison notched the first goal of the game, senior captain Lily Davison (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and sophomore midfielder Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) put the Seahawks on the scoreboard with back-to-back goals for a 2-1 lead.
  • The Big Red scored the final two of the first period for a 3-2 advantage.
  • Denison stretched its run to 5-0 with the first three goals of the second frame for a four-goal cushion. Horton and first-year attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) disrupted the run with two consecutive goals to pull St. Mary's within 6-4 with 5:29 left in the first half.
  • The Big Red tacked on two more in a 31-second span before sophomore attacker Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) scored with 18 ticks on the clock to send the Seahawks into halftime down, 8-5.
  • Denison outscored St. Mary's, 7-1, over the next 15 minutes to stake its biggest lead of the game, 15-6, with 14:13 remaining in the game.
  • Davison, sophomore Madison Laine (Kingsville, Md./Mercy), and Horton all scored over a five-minute span to make it a six-goal game with 4:21 to go.
  • The Seahawks fired off three more shots with two being off target and a free position shot with 46 seconds left saved by Aubrey Hughes.

  • St. Mary's edged the Big Red, 33-29, in shots and posted a +5-turnover margin as the Seahawks caused 13 of Denison's 19 turnovers.
  • The Seahawks edged Denison, 16-13, in draw controls as Betch won a game-best five.

  • Junior goalie Maddie Clemmer (Middletown, Md./Middletown) finished the game with eight saves.

  • Josie Lucchesi paced the Big Red with a game-best four goals while Anna DeVuono contributed a hat trick in Denison's second straight win.
  • Caroline O'Dea turned away 10 shots in 50:25 minutes while Allaire Kotz picked up a team-best five ground balls.
