Betch, Dunigan Combine for Nine Goals as St. Mary’s College Women’s Lacrosse Snaps Skid

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team halted their three-game slide Wednesday evening (March 15) as attackers Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Bella Dunigan (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) combined for nine goals. St. Mary's College (4-4) picked up a 17-14 victory over the host Colorado College Tigers (4-3).
 
How It Happened
  • The Tigers opened the game with a 4-1 run to lead by three goals with 4:01 to go in the first period. Sophomore midfielder Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) put a stop to the run with an unassisted goal with just over two minutes left.
  • Another 4-1 run by Colorado College gave the hosts a five-goal cushion with 4:09 remaining in the first half. The Seahawks ripped off five unanswered goals in the final 2:45 to head into halftime in an 8-8 deadlock. Dunigan and junior captain MC Mortimer (Baltimore, Md./Friends) were quite the duo as Dunigan scored three off three Mortimer passes.
  • Back-to-back goals by Horton and first-year attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) handed St. Mary's its first lead of the game, 10-9, four minutes into the second half. CC regained the advantage once again with 5:10 left in the third as the Tigers notched three in a row for a 13-11 lead.
  • Sophomore midfielder Madison Laine (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) and senior captain Lily Davison (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) each found the back of the net in the last 3:22 for the game's sixth tied score.
  • The 2-0 run that ended the third stretched to 6-0, giving the Seahawks a 17-13 advantage with 1:21 remaining in the game. Colorado College netted its final goal with 41 seconds on the clock.

  • St. Mary's posted a 39-30 shot advantage while gaining a 22-16 margin in ground balls as Mortimer and first-year defender Carsyn Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) each scooped up a game-high four loose balls.
  • The Tigers edged the visitors, 18-16, in draw controls as Devon Ortman won a game-best nine draws.
  • Turnovers and caused turnovers were both equal with 11 and 5 each, respectively.
  • The Seahawks scored five free position goals on eight free position shots while CC was 5-of-9 from the hash marks.

  • Betch led all scorers with five goals and six points while Dunigan put up a career-best four goals.
  • Mortimer finished with a career-tying three assists plus one goal while Davison grabbed a career-tying six draw controls and added two goals.
  • Junior defender Kayla Kopf (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) forced a career-best two turnovers.
  • Junior goalie Maddie Clemmer (Middletown, Md./Middletown) finished the game with a career-tying 12 saves.
 
Colorado College Game Notes
  • Kendall Havill and Tobin Lonergan each scored three goals to lead the Tigers while Natalie Slade made four saves.
