ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team owned a 16-0 halftime and never looked back in winning their United East Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament semifinal game Wednesday afternoon (May 3). Top-seeded St. Mary's College (13-5) ended the day with a 21-3 victory over No. 4 seed Hilbert College (3-9) to move on and defend their league crown.
Sophomore attackman
Keegan Preis (Upper Falls, Md./Loyola Blakefield) set the program's single-season record for assists with a five-assist performance today. Preis currently has 59 assists, surpassing the previous mark of 55 established by
Andrew Toussaint '01 in 2001.
The Seahawks will host the championship game this Saturday at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium at 1:00 p.m., taking on the winner of the semifinal game between No. 2 seed SUNY Morrisville (8-4) and No. 3 Penn College (11-6).
Tickets will be $5 for adults; $3 for senior citizens, children 6-18, and non-SMCM students; Free for SMCM faculty, staff, and students and children under 5. Stadium gates will open at 12:00 p.m.
How It Happened
- After the Seahawks grew their lead to 18-0, Hilbert tallied its first goal of the game with 17 seconds left in the third to avoid a shutout loss.
- A pair of Ryan Davis' goals sandwiched a trio of St. Mary's goals from midfielders Ryan Frick (Davidsonville, Md./Northeast) and Mark LoPresto (Elkton, Md./Tome) and first-year attackman Ryan Roth (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) in the final 15 minutes of the game.
Inside the Box Score
- Senior Mitch Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) and first-year Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) combined for a 27-of-28 effort at face-off X. Boudreau went 15-for-15 with 14 ground ball pickups.
- Shots and ground balls finished in favor of the Seahawks, 64-8 and 61-17, respectively.
- Hilbert committed 33 turnovers and went 15-of-36 on clears.
St. Mary's College Game Notes
- For the fourth time this season, first-year attackman Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) scored five goals while scooping up a season- and career-tying five grounders. Martel also caused a season- and career-best three caused turnovers.
- Seniors Walker Krizman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and PJ Fenchak (Lutherville, Md./Towson) each finished the game with three goals and an assist. Fenchak's efforts tied his career-highs in goals and points.
Hilbert Game Notes
- Griffin Miller made 20 saves for the Hawks while Davis scored twice and Joey DiMaria notched Hilbert's other goal.
