Seahawks Field Hockey Takes Down No. 16 Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team bested a nationally-ranked opponent to open their 2023 campaign. St. Mary's College (1-0) topped No. 16 Washington and Lee University on the road Friday evening with two fourth-quarter goals.

How It Happened
  • The host Generals struck first at 10:58 with an unassisted goal from Betty Boatwright.
  • Washington and Lee's one-goal lead stood for the next 36 minutes until sophomore forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) connected on a pass from senior captain Audrey Dickens (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) to knot the game at 1-all just under two minutes into the fourth period.
  • Sophomore forward Briana Allen's (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) first collegiate goal came with less than five minutes left in the game to give the Seahawks a 2-1 advantage.

Inside the Box Score
  • WLU dominated the first quarter, 7-1, in shots but St. Mary's then outshot them, 10-1, over the final three frames.
  • After the hosts posted a 3-0 margin in penalty corners in the first period, the Seahawks collected an 8-2 edge in corners the rest of the way.

St. Mary's College Game Notes
  • First-year Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) made three saves in her collegiate debut, picking up the win in her first career start.
  • Allen was also making her Seahawk debut after sitting out her rookie season with injury.
  • This is just St. Mary's third win over the Generals in 10 meetings and first since a 2-1 victory in 2015. This is also the first time that the Seahawks have beaten WLU on its home turf.

Washington and Lee Game Notes
  • Abby Long picked up four stops and Shelby Miller had a defensive save in the Generals' season-opening loss.
