St. Mary's Volleyball Splits Second Day of Tri-Match

Staunton, VA- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Volleyball team (2-1) opened up their season in Staunton, Virginia at a two-day tri-match featuring Mary Baldwin (0-2) and Virginia Union (1-0). The Seahawks defeated the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin both yesterday and today but fell short to the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union.

How it Happened

  • St. Mary's downed Mary Baldwin in their second match-up. After defeating the Fighting Squirrels yesterday, the Seahawks hit the court ready to continue their winning streak. The Seahawks won in three sets: 25-17, 25-18, and 25-22. St. Mary's dominated the stat board with 34 kills over Mary Baldwin's 23. This furthered into their aces (11-8), blocks (5-4), and digs (49-35). Senior Meghan Stevens (Westminster, MD) led the Seahawks in kills (10) and digs (12). First-year Lauren Panageotou (Baltimore, MD) notched a career-high of 11 assists.

  • St. Mary's didn't have too much time to celebrate their second win of the season, as they immediately hit the court against Virginia Union for another match. While the Seahawks fought hard, the Lady Panthers took the match in three sets (25-22, 25-21, and 25-20). The Seahawks fell short on kills in the first and second set, but took the third set in kills 11-10. The Lady Panthers out-dug the Seahawks 49-45.

The St. Mary's Volleyball team be back on the road on Wednesday, September 6th as they travel to Frederick, Maryland. The Seahawks will match up against the Hood College Blazers at 7:00 PM.
