Evans, Ochman Propel Seahawks Men’s Soccer to Win over Rosemont

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – In a rematch of last season's United East Conference Championship Tournament final Tuesday night (Oct. 22), the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team came out on top once again as forwards Lucas Evans (Greenbelt, Md./South River) and Alex Ochman (Rockville, Md./Wootton) shined for St. Mary's College.

The Seahawks (8-6-2, 7-0-0 UEC) moved into a two-way tie for the top spot in the league standings with their 3-0 league win over Rosemont College (6-7-3, 3-4-0 UEC).

Last season, SMCM and the Ravens ended in a 2-2 draw before St. Mary's College gained a 5-4 edge in penalty kicks to claim the 2023 United East men's soccer crown.

How It Happened
  • The first half was all SMCM as the hosts outshot Rosemont, 13-2 and owned a 2-0 lead within the first 15 minutes.
  • Evans was the first to put St. Mary's College on the scoreboard as he corralled Ochman's long pass from the right, taking a few dribbles before finding the back of the net at 12:43.
  • Sophomore midfielder Christian Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) netted his second goal of the season at 14:04 when junior midfielder Jack Nelson (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) connected with Ochman, who then found Johnson streaking into the penalty box.
  • The Seahawks headed into halftime with the 2-0 lead as sophomore goalkeeper Jordon Eckman (Loyola Blakefield) turned away the Ravens' shot in the 15th minute while their shot in the 26th minute was off the mark.
  • SMCM tacked on an insurance goal early in the second half when Evans finished off Ochman's corner kick at 46:27.
  • Rosemont picked up its offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting St. Mary's College by six shots, but Eckman stood strong in goal, collecting five saves over the final 45 minutes.
  • The Ravens put together a flurry of shots in the final five minutes of the game with Eckman denying two and the Seahawk defense clearing one off the goal line.

Inside the Box Score
