ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team faced their fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the season Thursday afternoon (Oct. 24). St. Mary's College (7-10) had its four-game win streak snapped with a 5-0 non-conference setback to No. 6 Christopher Newport University (12-1).
How It Happened
- CNU jumped on the scoreboard in the seventh minute when Maddison Steele found the back of the cage off an assist from Courtney Hughlett.
- Following that early goal, the Seahawks hung tough with the visitors, holding the Captains scoreless for the next 30 minutes and heading into halftime only down one goal.
- SMCM put goalie Lily Kerr to work in the second quarter, forcing her to make four saves on six shots and five penalty corners.
- Steele struck again for Christopher Newport at 36:27 to double her team's lead. Seconds before the end of the third period, Julie Oleyar gave the Captains a 3-0 advantage.
- Katie Abendschoen and Gigi Stephan scored 10 minutes apart in the fourth for the 5-0 CNU victory.

- Abendschoen fired off a game-high five shots (two on goal) while Steele led CNU with two goals on four shots.
