SMCM Women’s Basketball Holds on for Second Straight Win

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – First-year Head Coach LaTanya Collins officially made her Seahawk debut Tuesday night (Nov. 12) as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team notched their second victory in a row. St. Mary's College (2-0) survived a late rally by Virginia Wesleyan University (1-1) to claim a 67-66 non-conference win.

How It Happened
  • The first quarter featured eight lead changes and one tied score as both teams worked to find their offensive rhythm. Virginia Wesleyan claimed the first frame, 16-15, as Keagan Schwab led all scorers with six points.
  • The Seahawks used a 52.6-field goal percentage in the second period to outscore VWU, 22-14 and stake a 37-30 halftime advantage. SMCM started the quarter on a 16-2 run to distance themselves from the Marlins. Sophomore center Olivia Hedrick (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) came off the bench to lead all scorers with seven points, including five coming in the team's opening run.
  • St. Mary's College bolstered its lead to nine (51-42) with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter as back-to-back steals led to layups by junior guards Tramarie Mobray (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) and Sam Blaylock (Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale). A pair of Schwab three-pointers bookended a 9-2 run for Virginia Wesleyan at the end of the frame as the Marlins closed the gap to 53-51 heading into the fourth.
  • VWU's fight paid off in the midway through the fourth when the Marlins reclaimed a 58-55 lead at 5:28 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Bre Robinson. The advantage was short-lived as consecutive three-pointers by Blaylock and sophomore Rayna Miller (Westminster, Md./Key) and a Mobray layup returned a five-point advantage to the Seahawks (65-60) at 3:36.
  • Virginia Wesleyan pulled within 67-66 on a two-point Jaiden Hunter jump shot with 2:02 left in the game but neither team could settle their offense, and the score remained 67-66 at the buzzer.
